VIVRE EN AMERIQUE

Pour être franche, je me suis faite plusieurs fois la réflexion pendant mon séjour : «Je ne voudrais pas habiter ici». Pourquoi ? me direz vous alors que 11,1 millions de personnes y ont émigrés rien qu'en 2011. C'est essentiellement parce que je n’adhère pas à certains aspects du mode de vie américain.

Voici sept points à débattre :

Je suis allergique à leur comportement de consommation excessif. Certes ils ont le top en termes de confort mais de là à ce que ça soit une valeur suprême, ça me dérange. (voir article précédent)
Je suis carrément réticente à leur système de vie très contrôlé (par l’état) et à leur mentalité très puritaine.
J’ai du mal à me faire à leur manière de parler exagérément, qui fait parfois «sur jouée».
Pour moi, ce pays manque cruellement d’authenticité. En termes d’architecture par exemple, son héritage culturel est assez pauvre comparé à celui l’Europe. Je ne pointe pas du doigt, seulement j’aime trop me perdre dans les petites rues bordées de bâtiments en pierre et de terrasses de cafés...
Autre chose, la cuisine américaine se résume à une nourriture peu raffinée, trop grasse ou trop sucrée à mon goût. Qu’on se le dise, un hamburger c’est bon une fois de temps en temps, pas toutes les semaines.
Ensuite, je dirais que je supporte assez mal cette habitude de rester enfermés, de travailler et manger à l’intérieur avec la climatisation à fond, peu importe la météorologie.
Une majorité des américains manque véritablement de curiosité intellectuelle. Je ne sors pas cette idée par hasard, plusieurs personnes m'en ont fait part, notamment un ami qui m’a confié que ses concitoyens travaillaient beaucoup et étaient tout simplement trop fatigués ensuite pour faire l’effort d’apprendre. Bien sûr ces propos sont à nuancer dans la mesure où beaucoup d’américains combinent plusieurs postes pour des motivations financières tandis que d'autres sont de véritables workaholics (fous du travail). Il faut aussi savoir que le niveau des écoles privées est très élevé mais que la sélection se fait par l’argent en raison du coût excessif de l’éducation.

Et puis finalement, j’ai voyagé un peu et découvert que ce pays à multiple facettes a aussi beaucoup de charme. Je suis notamment admirative devant leur optimisme et leur combativité qui expliquent leur réussite dans le business et leur capacité à faire face aux situations difficiles.

J'ai également beaucoup apprécié la façon dont les différentes cultures se côtoient (même si le système communautaire reste bien présent). Dans ce pays développé, il n’y a pas de tabou autour de ce mélange des populations car l'Amérique est une terre d'immigration avant tout, et c'est certainement ce qui fait sa force.

Maintenant que la date de mon départ se rapproche, j’ai une petite boule au ventre. Car quoi qu’on en dise, les américains sont très attachants pour leur naturel enjoué, leur simplicité et leur sympathie. Et surtout ils méritent qu’on s’intéresse à eux parce qu’ils ont encore et toujours une longueur d’avance !

J’ai eu la chance de vivre au sein d’une famille américaine pendant quelques temps, et donc de découvrir pleinement les joies et les travers de leur culture.

LIVING IN AMERICA

To be honest, I have think several times during my stay: "I would not live here." Why? whereas 11.1 million people emigrated there in 2011. This is mainly because I do not agree with certain aspects of American life.

Here are seven points to be discussed:

I'm allergic to their excessive consumption behavior. Of course, they have the top in terms of comfort but where that it is a supreme value, it bothers me. (see previous article)
I am totally unwilling to their very controlled life (by the state) and very puritanical mentality.
I find it hard to get used to the way they talk excessively, which sometimes "played out."
For me, this country lacks authenticity. In terms of architecture for example, cultural heritage is quite poor compared to Europe. I'm not accusing, just that I like too much getting lost in the small streets surrounded by stone buildings and pavement restaurant ...
Then the kitchen comes down to unrefined food, too fat or too sweet for my taste. That is to say, a hamburger is good every once in a while, not every week. Then I would say that I support this habit badly enough to stay shut, work and eat inside with the air conditioning back, no matter the weather.
A majority of Americans have really a lack of intellectual curiosity. I did not get this idea by accident, many people have expressed it to me, including a friend who told me that his people worked hard and were just too tired then to make efforts to learn. But many Americans combine several positions for financial reasons while others are real workaholics. Also you have to know that the level of private schools is very high but the selection is made by money because of the excessive cost of education.

And finally, I traveled a bit and found that this multi-faceted country also has a lot of charm. I especially appreciate their optimism and fighting spirit that explain their success in business and their ability to cope with difficult situations.

I also enjoyed how different cultures live together (even if the Community remains present). Developed in this country, there is no taboo around this blend of populations because America is a land of immigration foremost, and that is certainly what makes its strength.

Now that my departure date gets closer, I have a little knot in my stomach. Because what they say, Americans are very engaging for their playful nature, their simplicity and sympathy. And above all they deserve that we interes in them because they are still and always one step ahead!

I was fortunate to live in an American family for some time, and therefore fully discover the joys and through their culture.
